Historic shrine
With origins traditionally traced back about 1,800 years, Sumiyoshi Taisha is the head shrine of roughly 2,300 Sumiyoshi shrines in Japan and has long been associated with safe voyages and maritime protection.
Why visit: Its Sumiyoshi-zukuri main halls represent one of Japan’s oldest shrine architectural styles; the main halls are National Treasures, while the arched Sorihashi bridge is one of Osaka’s most recognizable sacred scenes.
Waterfront leisure
The Tempozan waterfront developed as part of Osaka Bay’s modern leisure and port redevelopment, bringing major visitor facilities together beside Osaka Port.

Family attraction
Kaiyukan opened in 1990 as part of Osaka Port’s waterfront redevelopment. Its exhibition concept follows the Pacific Rim, arranging large habitats to represent connected regions around the Pacific Ocean.
Why visit: The enormous Pacific Ocean tank with whale sharks is the centerpiece of a descending journey through marine habitats, making the aquarium especially strong for families and travelers interested in immersive nature exhibits.
City views
The Umeda Sky Building emerged from an ambitious late-20th-century architectural plan for interconnected towers. The completed design uses two towers joined high above the city by the Floating Garden Observatory structure.

Retro Osaka atmosphere
Shinsekai grew from the site of the 1903 National Industrial Exposition. Its first Tsutenkaku opened in 1912 as part of an entertainment district with Luna Park; the current tower was rebuilt in 1956 with strong local support.
Why visit: Retro streets, kushikatsu culture, Tsutenkaku views and the Billiken good-luck figure give the neighborhood a character that feels very different from Osaka’s newer commercial districts.
Shopping district
Shinsaibashi developed around the historic bridge and commercial route that connected Osaka merchants and shoppers. Over generations the district became one of the city’s best-known retail corridors.
Why visit: A long, covered shopping environment linking modern fashion, long-established stores and easy access to Dotonbori, making it one of the most convenient places to experience Osaka’s commercial energy.
Local food market
Its roots go back to the late Edo period, when fish merchants gathered near Enmyoji Temple. The market’s name refers to the temple’s black gate, and the area grew into an important food market serving residents and professional chefs.
Why visit: Known as “Osaka’s kitchen,” its roughly 580-meter arcade brings together around 150 shops and lets travelers experience seafood, produce, street food and everyday Osaka food culture in one place.
Food, neon lights & riverside atmosphere
The district takes its name from Yasui Doton, associated with excavation of the canal begun in 1612. After the canal opened, the area developed into a major theater and entertainment quarter, helping shape the lively Minami district seen today.
Why visit: Its canal-side neon, giant three-dimensional signs, food culture, theaters and famous Glico sign compress Osaka’s entertainment personality into one walkable district.
History & city landmark
Construction began in 1583 under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who used the castle as a major base during Japan’s unification era. The Toyotomi keep fell in 1615; the Tokugawa shogunate later rebuilt the castle. The present main tower was reconstructed in 1931 with donations from Osaka citizens.
Why visit: One of Osaka’s defining symbols, combining massive stone walls and moats with a museum devoted to Hideyoshi, the Sengoku era, and the castle’s repeated destruction and rebirth.
